The Book Badge Project
The Book Badge Project is FriendlyReads' editorial initiative dedicated to helping writers transform completed manuscripts into publication-ready works.
Through professional editorial guidance, collaborative revisions, layout, and proofreading, we help authors strengthen their manuscripts while preserving their unique voice and creative vision.
A manuscript that successfully completes the editorial process is awarded the FriendlyReads Book Badge, recognizing that it has met our publication-ready standard and is one step closer to becoming a printed book.
The Printed Dreams Project
The Printed Dreams Project is FriendlyReads' long-term publishing initiative dedicated to helping selected publication-ready manuscripts become professionally printed books.
Building upon the foundation established through the Book Badge Project, this future initiative aims to give writers the opportunity to see their stories transformed from polished manuscripts into physical books they can proudly hold, share, and preserve.
While printing is not currently included in the Book Badge Project, manuscripts that successfully complete the editorial process will be in a favorable position for future consideration as funding, partnerships, and publishing resources become available.

Rather than rewriting stories, our goal is to strengthen them while preserving the author's individual style, creativity, and storytelling voice.
Every manuscript represents countless hours of imagination and dedication. Our editors are committed to helping each writer refine their work with professionalism, care, and respect.

Editorial Summary
Upon successful completion of the editorial process, the manuscript will be considered publication-ready, meaning it has completed the FriendlyReads editorial workflow and is prepared for future publication opportunities.
Our Editorial Philosophy
FriendlyReads believes that every manuscript deserves the level of editorial attention appropriate to its needs.
Our editors are here to strengthen your manuscript—not to rewrite your story into someone else's.
To achieve this, the program primarily provides a combination of Line Editing and Copy Editing, which we believe offers the greatest benefit for most completed manuscripts.
Throughout every stage of editing, we strive to:
preserve each author's unique voice;
improve clarity and readability;
strengthen consistency and sentence flow;
correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting;
identify minor continuity issues; and
prepare the manuscript for layout and proofreading.
Where an editor determines that a manuscript would substantially benefit from broader structural improvements, Developmental Editing may be recommended before the standard editorial process continues.
Such recommendations are intended to strengthen the manuscript and should never be interpreted as criticism of the author's work.
For manuscripts with only isolated plot or structural concerns, editors will ordinarily provide targeted revision recommendations rather than recommend a full Developmental Edit.
Eligibility
Who Can Apply?
The From Manuscript to Masterpiece initiative is designed for writers who have completed a manuscript and are ready to work collaboratively with our editorial team.
To be eligible, your submission should meet the following general requirements:
Original Completed Manuscript
The manuscript must be your own original work and should already be completed before submission.
This program is intended to help refine completed manuscripts rather than develop works that are still in progress.
The completed story must be published on the FriendlyReads app.
Language
We currently accept manuscripts written in:
English
Filipino
Taglish (a natural combination of English and Filipino)
Recommended Manuscript Length
To ensure manuscripts remain suitable for future publication as a single printed volume, we recommend the following guidelines.
Novels
Approximately 50,000–80,000 words
Approximately 30–60 chapters
Around 1,200–2,000 words per chapter
Poetry Collections
Approximately 70-100 poems
Short Story Collections
Approximately 15–20 completed short stories
Each story should generally not exceed 10,000 words
These recommendations may occasionally be adjusted where appropriate, but they provide a helpful guide for writers preparing their submissions.
Self-Edited Manuscripts
Before submitting your manuscript, we encourage you to complete your own editing and revisions first.
The goal of this program is not to perform a writer's first draft revision, but to help polish a manuscript that has already received the author's best effort.
Writer Commitments
What We Ask From You
Editing is a collaborative journey.
To help every project succeed, we ask participating writers to make a few important commitments.
One Opportunity Per Writer
Because funded editorial resources are limited, each writer is generally eligible for one funded editorial opportunity through this initiative.
We may announce additional slots per writer per cycle, depending on availability of resources.
We encourage you to choose carefully which manuscript you wish to submit.
Choose the Story That Means the Most to You
Rather than submitting your newest manuscript or the first completed story you have available, we encourage you to submit the manuscript you are most proud of.
Ask yourself:
"If one of my stories were to become publication-ready, which one would I choose?"
That is the manuscript we hope to help you develop.
There Is No Need to Rush
Great stories take time.
If you believe your best manuscript is still ahead of you, we encourage you to continue writing, revising, and growing as an author before submitting.
Our vision is long-term.
We hope to eventually provide every dedicated FriendlyReads writer with the opportunity to prepare at least one publication-ready manuscript.
Stay Engaged Throughout the Process
Editing works best when authors and editors communicate openly.
If your manuscript is accepted, we ask that you remain reasonably available throughout the editorial process to:
review editorial feedback;
answer questions;
discuss revisions; and
participate in collaborative decision-making.
Your involvement plays an important role in producing the strongest possible manuscript.
Queue & Scheduling
How Manuscripts Are Scheduled
FriendlyReads currently works with a limited number of volunteer editors.
To ensure every manuscript receives the attention it deserves, editorial projects are scheduled according to both submission order and editor availability.
First-Come, First-Served
Eligible manuscripts are generally placed into the editorial queue according to the date they are received.
However, actual scheduling will also depend upon editor availability, workload, and the complexity of manuscripts already in progress.
Confirmation Before Editing Begins
When your manuscript reaches the front of the queue, FriendlyReads will contact you to confirm that you are still available to begin the editorial process.
This helps ensure that editorial resources are used efficiently and that both the author and editor are ready to begin working together.
Collaborative Communication
Throughout the project, communication will ordinarily take place through a shared Messenger conversation involving:
the author;
the assigned editor; and
FriendlyReads.
This allows everyone to remain informed, ask questions, provide updates, and resolve concerns quickly throughout the editorial journey.
Deferrals
We understand that life happens.
If you are temporarily unavailable when your editorial slot becomes available, you may request a voluntary deferral.
Generally:
up to two voluntary deferrals may be granted; and
deferred authors will receive favorable consideration for future openings without preventing newly accepted applicants from entering the program.
Our goal is to remain flexible while ensuring editorial opportunities continue moving forward for everyone.
Inactivity & Reapplication
If Your Plans Change
We understand that circumstances may change after submission.
If we are unable to contact you after your manuscript reaches the active queue, FriendlyReads will make reasonable efforts to reconnect before taking any action.
This will generally include three reasonable contact attempts over a period of at least fourteen (14) calendar days.
If no response is received, your manuscript may be removed from the active editorial queue.
Voluntary Withdrawal
If you decide that the timing is no longer right, you may voluntarily withdraw your manuscript before editing begins.
There is no penalty for doing so.
Future Reapplication
Removal from the active queue or voluntary withdrawal does not normally prevent future participation.
When you are ready, you are generally welcome to apply again during future calls for submission, subject to program availability and eligibility requirements.
